[Terra promised Roxas they'd work together to get answers, but one weird thing after another has been happening in this place to stop him making any kind of progress. First their arrival, then the weird coldness that's been bothering him the past few days, and he's even started to... fade away. A few other people have had the same issue.
To top it all off, now he just feels tired. Maybe it's the stress of everything that's happened, but... something just doesn't feel right. He doesn't normally get worn out this easily.
He has no idea what to do about it, except to hope that it doesn't get worse, but it occurs to him that maybe Roxas has been affected, too. Time for a voice call!]
Hey... Roxas? It's Terra. Is everything okay with you?
[it's been somewhat the opposite for roxas—he's aware enough that something hasn't been right these last few days, but nothing seems to be affecting him directly. it's more through word of mouth and paying attention to other people who pass by.
so obviously, he's not really expecting a call from terra. even if something was wrong with him, the last thing he's really expecting is for anyone to actually check up on him. it's not a bad thing, just... strange. without axel or xion around, the only ones who would ever ask without seeming to have an agenda of some sort, the notion sort of flies over his head. (and maybe he'll just also not used to being able to communicate with people this way).]
Me? I'm fine. I heard some people talkin' about not feeling well, but it hasn't gotten to me or anything. [maybe those people just need to drink an elixir. it'll make them feel better...
but after a short pause, he'll return the question.]
[There had probably been a better way of going about this.
But she had been a princess for all of sixteen years, and the day she learned the meaning of subtlety was unlikely to ever come.
That's why today she finds herself cornered in an alleyway by a robot after she'd tried to help a resident of CERES. A resident that had ended up being a pickpocket, of all things.
But despite that, she couldn't have left them to face the robots alone, and had pushed them in a safe direction before running and trying to draw the robot away. And now, even with a metal claw being waved in her direction, she was still convinced that she had been right in helping.]
You were going to injure them, were you not? I could not stand by and watch.
[he hadn't been traversing the alleyway, but coming up a nearby street when roxas heard the sound of a voice. amid the normal city sounds, this one seemed different—out of place, maybe because it was confrontational.
either way, it's something of idle curiosity that draws his attention. and almost immediately, he balks at the sight—he's not really a fan of ceres or their robots, so seeing what looks like a physical threat is enough for him to feel the need to go into action. maybe this person is wrong; roxas doesn't know without any context, but it doesn't matter. someone getting hurt because of ceres is just not cool with him at all.]
Hey! [he calls out, more to get the robot's attention than anything else. he's making his way down the alley, one of his keyblades already in hand and before there's much chance for anything else to happen, he's raised it to the metal claw, preventing it from being able to make any sort of contact with the girl.] Don't you guys ever play fair?
[because it doesn't seem like it. even if she's done nothing wrong, she didn't seem to be armed, and she'd said something about injuring someone else. he snarls a little at the bot, but then looks back to her, brows knit.]
[Terra is really doing his best not to bombard him with his usual 'ARE YOU OKAY' worrying. As usual, though, he's not very good at hiding that he's been concerned ever since they were separated by the spirits. where u at, rucksack??]
[rucksack probably would have done the same if he could. probably. he's been a bit contemplative since their run in with riku and he's still not really sure how to handle it.
(not that he isn't concerned about terra, of course, but he's just bad at this)
there is one thing that's sidetracked him—the fact that being up on a cold mountain for the better part of a week without his black coat and little more than weak fire spells to keep him warm has left him with a bit of a cold. and that's exactly why he sounds a little groggy and very nasal when he responds.]
Terra... I'm okay. Sorry I didn't look for you sooner. I guess I fell back asleep... [oops. he doesn't even remember doing that. is this really what being sick is like?] You got back okay too, right?
[you didn't get yourself shot or something while separated, did you????]
[ After the events of the library, and the resurgence of her memories, Mary has been on something like autopilot. She doesn't entirely want to think about what had happened, everything about herself that had almost completely vanished over the last few days-- not until she fixes what she can.
Roxas will get a text fairly early in the morning, simply: ]
I'm waiting at our spot. I have the ice cream.
[ The return to routine should feel comforting, she'd hoped, and there's something that helps ease her nerves when she's up there, one bar of ice cream clutched in each hand. But arriving early and the silence she's left with as she looks out over the colony just opens her up to her own thoughts.
She hadn't remembered a thing on her own.
She'd scared so many people.
Her friends, the people she cared about, the ones she'd told Arles she never wanted to forget-- all blank faces, introducing relationships to her that she ought to have held onto with all of her might. People she'd hurt, by not knowing them at all.
And Roxas, still making promises to her, even though she'd done the worst possible thing to him and forgotten just how close they were, the promises themselves...
It's like an overwhelming wave of guilt and fear rising up quickly within her, and before she knows it, the scenery in front of her blurs and melts as the tears start spilling down her face.
How does she even begin to apologize? What if Roxas doesn't even want to show up because of everything she'd put him through? ]
[when he gets the text, it's not to early that he's still sleeping—but definitely enough so that he's not completely awake yet, either. but that message jolts him into action pretty much immediately.
their spot, the ice cream—that means she remembers, right? then thah means roxas has absolutely no time to waste. he doesn't even reply to the message, quickly throwing his coat on over his clothes and opening up a corridor.]
—Mary! [he yells her name as soon as he makes it out the other side. he's frantic, and possibly a bit relieved. it's probably kind of obvious too that he didn't hesitate for even a second; his hair is even more spiky and disheveled than usual. how could he bother with any of that when he needs to check on mary and make sure she's okay?
even he knows that with her memories back, it would have to be tough on her. she doesn't usually go there so early, after all... and it was tough all the way around, for everyone. he may not be the best at these situations, but he's trying here.]
I don't know how to really start things like this but hey. I guess I just wanted to make sure you weren't caught up in too much craziness from the last couple of days and see how you were doing.
And maybe it's been a while since I've given you an update on stuff I've learned about this place anyway. So yeah. I guess text me back when you see this.
yeah, i'm okay. none of that weird stuff happened to me, so i... mostly was just trying to help out of a couple of my friends who got caught up up in it. what about you?? are you okay??
[he'll take the update on stuff too, but first comes checking that everything's cool with hiro. he got so sidetracked dealing with mary and xion that he hasn't had a chance to do much else yet.]
[Edna's not one to call for favors or anything of the sort, but this is something she can't really handle all alone by herself if Mikleo actually does pull a stunt like this while his BFF is missing. He hasn't re-enacted The Great Escape (yet), but better safe than sorry. It also doesn't help that Mikleo has an ability that allows him to pass undetected for a short period of time (as a literal bubble boy). And so, Edna speaks, in a completely deadpan voice, sounding for all in the world like an officer looking for a lost housecat.]
If you see a Meebo wandering around unsupervised, return him to [insert Zestiria household address in the Residential District here.] If he refuses to come along, tell him that Edna knows where to find search dogs. I'll ask for them to bark extra loud.
[Dogs. One of his worst fears, even as robot CYbuddy dogs.]
[ Ring. Ring. It's Mikazuki! Actually, he doesn't recall ever learning where Roxas lived or else he would have been on his way but a voice call is the next best thing since his texting is still full of emojis and typos. There's been a burning question on his mind lately and Mikazuki doesn't want to be obvious about his lack of understanding on the subject...around Swordhaus anyway, with Roxas however? He's a little more free on the subject. ]
Roxas-kun? [ Probably easiest to go RIGHT into it. ] I have a question if you don't mind answering! Aha, I'm not well versed in matters like these but...how would you cheer someone up?
[he's not really expecting a call from mikazuki, but that's more than welcome right now. he could use... talking to someone different. he hasn't really had the best of weeks himself.
there's a good chance that roxas is probably the worst person to ask about this sort of thing, but that's okay.]
Oh Mikazuki... hey. [a pause, and then:] How would I cheer someone up? I dunno...
I usually bring them ice cream and just sit with them. Listen, if they want to talk, or just stay with them. [though he's only done this with like. three people ever. he wonders if that means there's someone mikazuki wants to cheer up, but it feels a little too nosy to just ask.]
She's been putting this off for days, talking to her other friends and trying to figure out what to do. But no matter how much she thinks about this and no matter how much she discusses it, she's no closer to an answer. And so much of that is because no one else can understand the position she's in.
Everyone else has a heart.
As nervous as she is about approaching Roxas about something like this, she thinks she has to. So she'll seek him out in his room, nervously knocking on the door frame to let him know she's there. ]
[roxas isn't really too busy, if nothing else. he's just sprawled out pretty lazily atop his bed, mindlessly playing some bizarro ceres-tetris equivalent to pass the time. he's never going to be used to this whole "lots of free time" thing that they have without the organization breathing down their neck.
but when xion knocks on the door, he's quick to look up—and almost immediately reposition to sit upright.]
Oh, Xion... [he wasn't expecting the interruption, so he looks a bit surprised, but he follows it up with a welcoming smile.] What's up?
[ To be honest, Mary isn't sure what prompted the memory of Zara sternly correcting her movements and guiding her in a graceful circle. Maybe the dance Hiro had told her about, maybe just feeling nostalgic for the roommate who had been with her the longest.
She needed to save him too, she knows, and it's a fierce belief. But in the meantime... she can only imagine the look on his face if he found out she hadn't been practicing what he'd taught her.
So she's very, very quiet when she creeps out into the main area. Roxas and Xion are nowhere to be seen, and this gives her enough room for sweeping movements and mistakes without bonking into any walls. Hopefully without bonking into the couch, too.
And does she have a partner to waltz with?
... No, just her jacket, which she's holding by the sleeves as she counts quietly under her breath.
except that eventually, roxas will emerge from a morning of lazing around playing stupid games on his cerevice (why are they so addicting?), and when he does... he just stands in the doorway, baffled.
[ In terms of Good Days, Mary could afford to have more of them. But with Sousei and Tenka both disappearing again, with no real guarantee that they'd return, she's been a little more subdued and miserable, burying herself in her sewing projects. Which is fine, it's a distraction.
But what she's doing now can't really be called comforting. She'd had such a hard time sleeping lately, kept up by her own thoughts, that she'd finally dozed off on the couch. A much-needed nap, really.
Except whatever she's dreaming about has her eyebrows knitted together, her expression pale and distressed, and that might have just been a whimper. ]
[it wouldn't be the first time that roxas has come back to the apartment to find mary on the couch napping—and today's not much different in that regard. as the portal to his corridor closes behind him, it's one of the first things he sees.
...only it's immediately disconcerting, because it looks like she's having a nightmare of some sort. so he's quick to make his way over to the couch, couching down and giving her a very light shake.]
Mary? Mary... wake up.... [he's gentle, but still firm—he doesn't want to scare her, but he knows she probably doesn't want to stay asleep if she's having a bad dream, either.]
[bad as riku's fashion statement back in the day (...a little over year ago, riku) was, even he had better taste than a mask sprouting feathers. it's gonna sprout a beak and some wings at the rate it's going. how is it even possible for a mask to grow more and more feathers? ceres. the answer is always ceres.
he leans against a wall outside his apartment complex and twirls the mask between his fingers.]
Chances are that CERES isn't promoting some new fashion craze with these.
[but what are they for? and why feathers? he's never really been much of a feather guy, just parachute pants.]
[roxas is just planning on passing through the area in his typically melancholic sort of way (especially sill feeling out-of-sorts from how things ended with xion), but he can't help but to immediately bristle at the sound of riku's voice.
he doesn't really mean much by it, not when a lot of the hostility he once had has since subsided—there are a lot of answers roxas doesn't have yet when it comes to riku, but he doesn't feel the same scathing anger he once did.
maybe it's because it's obvious that riku isn't just trying to take him away and destroy him now. so after a moment, he'll stop and look to where riku is standing. roxas does have his own mask in hand; it's a lot easier to just carry it than deal with it trying to forcibly attach itself to his face, after all. his isn't nearly as exciting though, simply taking on gray hues. it's a little darker each day, but it doesn't seem to noticably strange otherwise.]
Something bad will probably happen. [that's what roxas thinks, anyway. whenever things start getting weird, there's an ominous feelings that always accompanies it, and rarely does it work out in their favor.]
[ So Mary's been pretty secretive, holing up in her room (presumably to rest and regain her stamina), or staying up too late and being fairly grumpy in the morning.
But today, when Roxas goes into his room, he'll find a new addition to his bed (not Mary, that would be weird). But three plush pillows: a big one shaped like a sea salt ice cream bar, one shaped like Xion's seashell, and a plain black square pillow, embroidered with his two Keyblades intersecting in the middle.
Where could they have come from, it's a mystery-- ]
[of course, he's been concerned and with half a mind to just use a corridor to check up on her—but fortunately, he remembers enough of the conversations about how dangerous it is to push a girl's buttons.
it doesn't stop him from being completely puzzled when he enters his room to find the pillows there. he didn't even know there were pillows like that—the ice cream and the seashell. it's actually not until he sees the black one, intricately embroidered with his keyblades on it that he realizes... this wasn't something just bought.
(and why would they be bought for him, anyway? nobody's ever given him gifts before.)]
...Mary? [he'll call out from the doorway; he's got the keyblade pillow in hand and he's obviously... puzzled.
it's not in a bad way, but the whole situation is just new and unfamiliar.
(and what is his feeling in his chest? he's... excited? hopeful? who knows.)]
Hey, Hiro... I'm okay now. A lot better now that we have food and somewhere to sleep.
[and ice cream. the most important thing of all.]
What about you? Is everything okay for you now? [or at least better than it was? roxas didn't deal with a lot of the worst things some other people went through and saw, so he's not doing nearly as bad as he could be.
maybe that's just how it goes when your entire existence has been shitty. another shitty few days doesn't traumatize him too much.]
[he's not okay, and that's partly why he hasn't made the effort to reach out to hiro. even though he wanted to hang out more and even though he said he would...
it's been tough.]
Yeah. Some... things happened after that, that's all. I'm okay.
[So like...... no matter how bizarre things were, they still have to report to work after. Especially since it's just them now, their co-workers long gone, which means they get the majority of the shifts these days.
Hooray. Ice cream for everyone.
Leon's far from recovered from the entire robot disaster, but he's good at putting up appearances and that's exactly what he's intending to do until he makes it to the ice cream shop and then he can't help himself. His mouth goes slack as he stares because................well, apparently in the ruckus, someone managed to upturn the ice cream tubs and turn off the air conditioning, which means that the floor is just covered in mixed ice cream goo that would at least go up to their ankles.
roxas may have evaded the robot disaster directly, but he is still trying to deal with plenty of issues all his own. but much like leon, he doesn't draw attention to it (beyond perhaps being more sullen than usual, but he knows leon doesn't care anyway).
leon gets the pleasure of being the first to walk into the ice cream goop, though roxas isn't far behind.]
Gross. [spoken like a true teenage boy. he scrunchesh is nose and looks at the (nauseating, honestly) grey-brown mix of ice cream and just has to wonder:] What happened in here?
[ Mary's done her best to stay... well, herself, these past few days. Because she's been through this song and dance before. People come into the colony, she befriends them, they promise not to leave, and then they leave. It's not their fault, and for the most part, she's kind of wearily accepted, that much more determined to save them.
But Ene is the first friend who'd come from home-- and she was gone too. And with that came thoughts, ones that troubled her-- because she knew she'd go home one day. She'd see her friends again.
But then what about the people here? What about Hiro and Kaoru and Shiho? What about Roxas? Going home meant not seeing them--
But--!
She's both sad and conflicted and it's starting to show in how she responds in conversations. For now, though, she's just on the couch with her knees pulled to her chest, staring ahead without really looking at anything. ]
[it's not like roxas hasn't noticed that something's up with mary—with how much time they spend together, it would be difficult to miss even the slightest change in her disposition.
he's let it slide for a bit, because he hasn't come to confide in him and he doesn't want to force it out of her. but when it goes on for too long to the point where their conversations just peter off, and when she sits on the sofa that way, she looks like...
well, she looks like him when things are weighing on him. so roxas is quiet for a while, quietly stalking off to the kitchen before returning with a sandwich—haphazardly cut in half so they can split it, but putting it down on the coffee table in front of couch as he sits.]
So... [he starts, but he trails off before he can try to say anything else.
he'll get there in a minute, though.] ...Do you wanna talk about it?
[ Mary had been serious about wanting to learn how to defend herself-- better. At all. Being able to halt something's movements was all well and good, but it was only temporary, and if that thing didn't have eyes, there was nothing she'd be able to do about it. And with a few foam bats purchased, she's been working with Roxas at trying to grant herself a little more of a fighting chance.
Today, though, she's lowering her bat with a soft groan and looking down at her arms. She's also a little winded, but that's nothing new. ]
I dunno... because I'm used to it, I guess? Keyblades are heavier than these, and I used those a lot every single day.
[all he ever did was work when he was with the organization. in nearly a year, he'd only ever had one single day off. even when he left the organization, he had heartless to contend with, he had battled riku, and even now in cerealia, he goes into ViViD to practice.
he doesn't really like fighting, but he has things to protect, so he keeps doing that.
but for now, roxas will toss the foam bat on the ground and close the gap a little, offering her a small smile.]
[ Happy Birthday to Mary, Happy Birthday to Mary!!
... Who has been dealing with a sad-looking bird for a while now, and is still actually sleeping-- where she once again fell asleep, on Roxas' shoulder. Which isn't all too comfortable, honestly, but somehow, she's gotten used to it.
When she stirs, the little wispy bird flutters its wings, startled, and starts hopping in nervous circles around the room. ]
[happy birthday! except that roxas is still not anywhere near awake enough to have remembered this yet. he barely even stirs until he hears her voice—and alongside that is his own bird resting atop his head.]
...Huh? [he mumbles out a questioning sound rather groggily, still not even opening his eyes yet. his neck his definitely a little stiff from having fallen asleep in this position again...
but after a minute or two, he'll start to wake a little more, letting out a loud yawn and making some vague attempt at opening his eyes.]
[ Don't mind Mary. She's just kind of... walking around with her eyes tightly squeezed shut? Which is going about as well as one would expect, since she's trying to grope her way along a wall back to her room and making a lot of noise in the process.
roxas hasn't had much in the way of problems... save for a brief inability to summon his keyblade, but he hasn't needed it much recently anyway. so really? kind of a non-issue.
but regardless, the sound of noise is enough to get roxas' attention. so he'll emerge, curiously and just:]
