◎ Background/History: canon; roxas
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? Nope!

◎ Personality:
Unlike most Nobodies who come to exist, Roxas is nothing short of a special case. In every sense of the meaning, he seems to defy everything that falls into their standard. A Nobody comes to exist when a person’s heart is consumed by the darkness and creates a heartless; the remaining body and strong will of that person can be reborn as a Nobody. They retain their human memories, and while they’re said to not have feelings (as they have no hearts), they’re also said to use the memories of their human lives to craft a personality, in many cases making them resemble who they were previously.

Roxas, though, is an exception to the rule. It’s joked that he was like a zombie for the first week of his existence, and he retains no memory of who he “was” previously—Sora. Because Sora’s lost heart was so brief, and his return to self was unique and unprecedented, Roxas and Sora were able to continue existing at the same time. And because he’s the Nobody of a Keyblade wielder, Roxas too is capable of wielding it—making him not only unique, but incredibly useful to Organization XIII, whose numbers he quickly became a part of upon existence. He differs in other ways, as well. Rather than closely resembling Sora, he resembles Ventus (as Ventus was in Sora’s heart at the time of the split, because everything relating to this series and Roxas has to be extremely convoluted).

There are some ways in which Roxas is similar to his Other, though. As he comes into his own, he’s very headstrong and determined, and always fights against the odds. When fired up especially, he’s not very keen on taking no for an answer. And above all else, the ones he considers friends are arguably the most important thing to Roxas. Much of what he does, especially towards the end of 358/2 Days, ties into wanting to be with his friends and enjoying their days, even though there are many obstacles that stand in his way.

In many other ways, however, Roxas is very different. Not being able to feel his connection to Sora for the better part of his existence means that while they share similarities at their core, he’s had the time to develop into his own personality without much outside influence of “his” past. Unlike Sora, who is unfailingly optimistic (and at times quite dumb), Roxas can be much more of a cynic, and often analytical when it comes to the situations around him. At first, there’s very little that he understands, not even the concept of laughter. But as he learns more about the world around him, he grows a distinct sense of self that only wavers because he doesn’t know his own origins.

He does gain a sense of humor, one that’s laced with sarcasm. It shines best with Axel, whether it’s poking fun at his friend, or making jabs at Demyx’s laziness—and he can take jokes as well as he makes them (like continuing to let Axel joke about what a zombie he was). All the same, he’s not afraid to catch an attitude, or talk back to his superiors if he disagrees with the things they’re saying. Roxas was quick to shoot back at Saïx when he called Xion broken; the idea of his friend being relegated to nothing more than a useless object set a fury within him that only intensified as the story progressed.

And that’s one of the most defining things about Roxas. As a Nobody, one who shouldn’t have feelings—he clearly possessed them. When he brought up his worries with Axel, the only response from Axel was that maybe he just “remembered” what worry felt like, but Roxas knew that wasn’t the case. Things like worry and sadness, longing, fear and anger are all things he’s been shown to express quite often. He experiences a great deal of pain for a variety of reasons, and even manages to shed tears at the loss of someone of importance to him, though at his first instance of tears, he didn’t understand what they were, questioning why he awoke with water on his face.

The worries he carries are large and all-encompassing, and ultimately, they are his motivation. Starting with a lack of understanding to why he needed a heart and why he needed to seek out other hearts needed to complete Kingdom Hearts, slowly everything comes together. It only leaves him with more questions though, and most of them are things he’s expected not to question. When he feels betrayed by Axel, it only furthers his concerns, and his final meeting with Xion only solidifies to Roxas how little he knows about himself. Why Axel would do those things, why the Keyblade chose him, who Sora was.... every last thing leads him to a mild crisis of self, and a great deal of anguish.

But despite that, the intent Roxas has holds reasons beyond just finding answers for himself. The way he sees it, if he can find those answers, he’ll have a greater understanding of his situation, and maybe find a way to put an end to the obstacles that plague it. In his anger, he leaves the Organization, even going as far to tell Axel that his leaving meaning nothing, because nobody would miss him—but Axel is still his friend. Despite all his anger and his feelings of being betrayed and lied to by the person he trusted most, there’s still part of Roxas that wants to go back to the way things were. It’s not about the Organization, or getting hearts to him. He just wants to hang out with his friend(s) (as at this point, he still remembers Xion), eating ice cream at the top of Twilight Town’s clock tower and enjoy their days. It’s what he wants to get back to most of all, which really just displays his underlying desire to lead something of a normal life. The friendship he shared with Axel and Xion bore very close resemblance to that of Sora, Riku and Kairi (and in some ways, Terra, Aqua and Ventus as well), which could account for the underlying desire, even if Roxas himself doesn’t quite understand it.

In a way, there’s a brief period where he gets this “normal” life; the early portion of Kingdom Hearts 2 displays this in great detail. While being hidden away in the simulated Twilight Town by DiZ, his memories of being in the Organization are stripped, leaving him to believe that he’s a normal student in his last week of summer vacation (a concept he’d learned about from Axel previously). He spends his days as a normal teenager, with his friends, and in this time, another side of Roxas can be seen. Still a bit sarcastic, he’s much more lighthearted and able to have fun... at least, until he begins to realize that something is just weird He has dreams of Sora, and he even begins to feel like something isn’t right. He’s observant enough to notice the strange glitches and other oddities around the town. And with Organization XIII still on his tail, once he’s discovered, his run-ins with Axel were less than savory. As it all comes to an end, he beats down the computer in the mansion with that fury that had been built up previously, from his other memories that were sealed away and now brought to light.

In both ending instances for him—his face-off with Riku at the end of 358/2 Days, as well as his struggles at the end of the beginning portion of KH2 share a very strong, resonating theme: Individuality. Roxas insists that he is himself and no one else, and later that his heart is all his own. And that’s the single most important thing when it comes to Roxas. No matter what his struggles are, how he is treated or betrayed, or how the odds are stacked against him... He just wants to be himself. He wants to find his own place in the world and exist peacefully, and he wants everyone else to know that he can’t be compared.

Within the context of the story, he does eventually come to terms with the fact that his existence is shared with Sora, and he accepts it willingly. But that never really changes the fact that even though they are technically two halves of a whole, they are much more different from one another than most Nobodies and their corresponding whole. This is acknowledged much later on; when Roxas has come to accept Sora and share his memories and pain with him deep in Sora’s heart, Sora is adamant in letting Roxas know that they’re different, and that Roxas deserves to be his own person. Because Roxas is himself, he’s not anyone else, despite his origins, or what he should be. He’s an individual, shaped from the hearts, memories and feelings of the people that surround him and Sora.

◎ Powers/Abilities:
As the Nobody of Sora, one of the Keyblade’s chosen ones, Roxas is granted the ability to use the Keyblade, something that makes him largely unique amongst the Nobodies. Much like Sora, he’s capable of summoning his Keyblade at will, using the weapon to fight off Heartless, Nobodies, and any other opponent that he may face. Unlike Sora, though, Roxas has gained the ability to wield a second Keyblade simultaneously, as a result of his pain having tapped into Ven’s heart resting in him. This makes Roxas rare among those who can wield the Keyblade, as dual wielding is not often seen. The Keyblade itself functions much like a sword or a bat; he can take on his opponents by striking them with it.

Roxas also has access to a variety of other abilities that are useful either against opponents, or to help himself. Magic-wise, he has elemental (fire, blizzard, aero, thunder) spells as well as a cure spell for healing. He’s highly capable in a fight, with not only standard abilities to block and dodge, but also to air slide, as well as air glide. And he’s got some pretty high jumps. The other of his prolific abilities is his Limit Break, a sort of last resort when in a dire situation. Roxas’ Limit Break is called Magic Hour, which causes his Keyblades to summon beams of light down on his enemies.

His primary abilities as a Nobody with Organization XIII include control of light and Samurai Nobodies. As means of travel, he’s also able to summon Corridors of Darkness, which allow him to pass from world to world (which wouldn’t be applicable within the game, at best it could take him short distances within the city or a ViViD stage, as it’s shown that the Corridors can be used in that way too).
